WINNER: Kirsty Healey

Neighbourhood Awards - Kirsty Healey

Kirsty Healey (left) from Ovenden attended the St Georges Youth Project as a teenager for a bit of fun and ended up finding her vocation.

At 13 years old Kirsty had little confidence in herself and her potential. She says she wasn’t very well behaved at school and didn’t get brilliant GCSE results but working at St Georges gave her the opportunity to make something of herself and aim towards a successful career.

In 2012 Kirsty, who was already helping out as a volunteer with the project, applied for a job as a Youth Worker apprentice with the project and was successful. She’s been working on the Groundwork Project, which provides opportunities for young people aged 12 – 16 years to learn arts, woodwork and cooking skills.

She’s already completed an NVQ 2 and 3 in Children and Young People’s Workforce and she’s hoping to progress to university next.

“If it hadn’t been for people believing in me and pushing me to achieve my goals I’m not really sure what I would be doing right now. What I do know is that I wouldn’t of learnt half the stuff that I know now, not only about this line of work but about myself!”

In 2012 Kirsty pushed herself to the limit, climbing Scarfell Pike, a 3,200ft mountain. She’s also completed a 22 mile charity bike ride and taken part in many early morning car boot sales and bag packs, all in aid of raising funds for the Youth Project based in Lee Mount.

She’s an inspiring role model to the young people of North Halifax and brings  passion and confidence to her work, always going above and beyond what is expected of her. The motivation and commitment she has shown over the years was clear in her nomination and the judges were pleased to recognise her as a North Halifax Star.
